The EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) has approved a six-month prolongation of the Norwegian special tax system for shipping.

The current tax scheme was originally approved by ESA as from the fiscal year 2007. Norway is in the process of notifying a revised ten-year tax scheme for ship owners. However, in view of developments in this specific area, the notification process requires additional time. The extension will allow more time to find good solutions to be approved for the next ten years. The Norwegian scheme entails a lower tax for maritime transport based on ship weight ("tonnage tax"), resulting in a reduced rate from the standard 24% corporate tax rate. The current scheme was approved by ESA until 31 December 2016. ESA first approved an extension of the system in November 2016 and now grants another extension to finalise the process concerning a revised scheme for the next ten years.
