The EFTA Surveillance Authority has today approved a six month prolongation of a Norwegian aid scheme providing tax refunds for seafarers.
The scheme provides refunds, to ship owners, of income tax and social security contributions. The scheme is in line with the Authority's guidelines on aid to the maritime industry, which allow for aid to ship owners facing competition from ships registered outside the EEA.
The scheme was last approved by the Authority in 2008. It has remained unchanged since then. The approval of the prolongation lets the Norwegian authorities keep the existing scheme operative whilst working on a redesign of the scheme that they intend to notify to the Authority in the near future.
